the piston ring bottomed in ring groove in the photo below. the customer was able to assemble with no apparent problems. but, once the engine started and got hot the trouble begins. unfortunately, the customer assembled it several times before checking all clearances. turns out the custom piston ring grooves were not machined deep enough for the ring used. the solution is to check everything twice and assume nothing. 

also, notice the hole burned through the aluminum from intake valve relief to top of top ring land. 

this photo shows the results of a bottomed-out piston ring after a short period of running, notice how clean the piston appears. the ring has nowhere to go and will lose ring seal. the rest is what happens when you just keep driving.

Injectors fail in ways besides becoming worn over time. One of the most common failures occurs when an injector cracks. When the body of the injector is cracked, the engine will not necessarily produce a miss, but will cause other problems, which can be more difficult and costly to find.

Although the engine may still run with a cracked injector, it will take an extended amount of time to crank. In some cases, you may notice some fuel dilution in the oil by checking the oil level is rising on the dipstick. When the engine is shut down, the crack in the injector’s body will often cause fuel to drain back from the fuel lines and rails back to the tank. When the leak occurs, the engine has to spin over for an excessive period of time in order to get to the peak the injection system performance. Ensuring that your injectors are up to par is one way to keep fuel cots lower and extend the life of your motor.

Diesel oil filter changes are critical. Oil filter life all depends on how often the vehicle is driven and the conditions in which it is being used. It is crucial to follow OEM recommended oil filter change intervals in order to keep your engine humming down the road efficiently without putting undo stress on vital engine components. Contaminated oil will create clogs in the engine and result in a failure that will keep the truck from earning for you.
Clean diesel air filters allow optimal airflow into the engine. Correct amounts of air combined with diesel fuel create the spark that gets you rolling. When the filter is dirty, the contaminants make the “mixing” process more difficult. When you allow your filter to accumulate dust and debris, it’ll result in air restriction. The truck compensates for this reduced air by working harder and consuming more fuel. A clean air filter helps maximize MPG and keep operating costs low.

Diesel fuel filters need to be changed at certain intervals as well. With modern diesel fuels, this is just as important as changing your oil and air filters. This needs to be a priority service item as well. Neglecting your fuel filter can result in your vehicle not getting clean fuel into the engine. Contaminated fuel will damage the vehicle’s engine and injectors over time, which will result in a costly failure. A clogged fuel filter can also cause a loss of overall power, bogging in your vehicle when trying to accelerate, and lower MPG.

Dirty oil damages the turbocharger by causing heavy scoring of critical bearing surfaces. the turbocharger may not be functioning properly due to damage from dirty oil.
To avoid damage, oil and filter should be of a quality that is recommended by OEM. These should be changed when a new turbocharger is fitted. 
Regular oil and filter changes should keep your turbochargers in great condition.
